The Fear of Knowing Oneself ការភ័យខ្លាចនៃការស្គាល់ខ្លួនឯង
Is there something that we don’t want to see about ourself?
It happens to almost everyone. We do not want to see ourselves clearly.
As we grew up, we were criticized by almost everyone around us. Our parents criticized us for big and small things that we do. They criticized us for our behavior, our habits, personality, intellect, grades, etc. We can see this in our own life.
When we become an adult, we have that feeling deep down in our subconscious that we are not good enough and we are not worthy of love. That feeling is operating in the background everywhere we go and everything we do, most of the time, if not all the time.
Now when someone suggests to us that we look at our behavior or our actions closely, we get scare of doing that, because we are afraid we might find something that is considered to be not good based on the judgement of the society or people around us.
We do not know ourselves, because we never want to look at ourselves as is. Whenever we look at ourselves we only want to see or look for something that is considered to be good or something that can make us feel good about ourselves. We do not want to see the bad side of ourselves so we never see them. Even if we see them, we get away quickly or give an excuse.
Because we run away from ourselves, we never get the opportunity to observe ourselves deeply and clearly. We do not know how our mind works, we do not know why we are unhappy, we do not know why we fear, we do not know why we are so frustrated, we do not know why we keep doing that same bad habits over and over, even after promising oneself to stop them next time. Life keeps going and we keep having problems in life, we keep suffering psychologically.
Without a clear understanding of oneself and our problems in life, we will not be able to dissolve those problems.
The first step is to be aware that we have been conditioned to be scared of looking at ourselves.
Step two is to drop all those fear of possibility of finding something not good and to accept whatever we will find about ourselves.
Step three is to start observing oneself very deeply without using any existing idea or images of oneself from the past.
Only then there will be possibilities that we will see ourselves as is, rather than see ourselves from the lens of the past programmings and bias. When we see ourselves clearly as is, then we will know the solution clearly as well. Therefore, we will act accordingly based on that clear perception of ourselves and the problems.
